to The Wild Rose Press. I was very happy that others thought the story would entertain readers and am gratified
that people are enjoying it.
The idea for The Last Straw came from a magazine article about a woman PI who had her own company doing employee background checks. The freckle-faced, strawberry-blonde stared at me from my bulletin board until I wrote her story!
I first wrote the story in 2007 as a romantic erotic suspense story for a new line opening up for Harlequin. It was rejected then and I set it aside but never forgot about it. I had stopped writing for about a year and a half and then I left my day job. A few days after my last day of work, I had lunch with one of my critique partners. She told me The Wild Rose Press was looking for short stories, (knowing I tend to write short). She said I might like to take a stab at that, asked me what I had. I described this plot for her and she jumped on it, really liking the premise. I said I wanted it not to be a suspense, though. She spun out some ideas and I went and wrote it. It came together pretty fast, but I did have to make a lot of changes based on my critique partners’ feedback. Their feedback worked, though, and I celebrated my first contract the following spring. (Things take time in the publishing world.)
Here’s what The Last Straw is about:
Ally Tobin left New York after one too
many bad dates, determined to rebuild a stable life and career as a private
investigator in Silicon Valley. But when the man she knew as one name walks into
her office with another, will her curiosity once again lead her to risk her
The last thing Special Agent Jared Green needs is "security risk"
stamped on the resume of his latest undercover identity. Especially by the
woman his job forced him to leave in New York without any explanation. She may
threaten his cover, but it's his heart on the line.
He's good at playing a part. She's good at catching a fake. Can they trust enough to give
love another chance?
